Ever since I took my first lesson at Silver Gate Farms three years ago, I constantly marvel at my luck that this was the first, and only, riding school I contacted. When it comes to basic horse-keeping skills, Julie Van Loo and Jim and Connie O'Leary set a wonderful example by teaching every student the importance of grooming - not just to clean the horse before and after riding, but to help bond with the horse. As a boarding facility, they treat every horse at the facility with the same amount of care as if it were their own; even when I haven't been able to get up there to see him, I have never had to worry about my horse being well cared for.
Whether they're teaching a new student or a more experienced rider to prepare for a competition, each instructor brings years of experience working with horses - raising foals, riding, teaching and competing - into each lesson. As the rider progresses, the instructors help students set new, realistic goals to pursue. Indeed, I was impressed to learn that the questions Jim asked me about my previous experiences around/riding horses were designed to help him choose an appropriate schooling horse for me to ride in my first lesson. When I was ready to lease (and eventually buy) one of Silver Gate Farms' horses, the trainers helped me select a good equine partner for me, again based on my goals and riding skills. AS the years go by and I continue to enhance my knowledge about horses and experience riding them, I can't imagine being at a finer facility than Silver Gate Farms.
